I thought that our staff receptionist (“StaffBitch”) was my friend and trusted co-worker. She’d worked for us for almost 2 years and was 24 at the time. She and my husband were phone buddies when he’d call the office to speak to me, and she even had lunch with us a few times, most notably on my birthday last year where she was our only guest. She and I would walk and get lunch together sometimes, we were each other’s date to an event for our narcissistic boss (“NarcBoss”), and I even baked things for her family and gave her a prized recipe of mine that I developed for chicken pot pie. NarcBoss managed to hatch a plan whereby he’d present everyone in our firm as old and out of touch therefore our clients were best served by signing up with him. They accomplished this over a series of months, while applying, interviewing, and accepting positions (together) at another firm literally two office buildings away down the street. Everyone in NarcBoss’s circle, including his minion, StaffBitch, knew that they were leaving our firm but us. He had called our firm’s clients before telling the managing partner of the firm. He told the office manager on a Friday and they both told me the following Monday. The StaffBitch proudly stated that the other firm would have hired her even if they had taken NarcBoss, like somehow that made a difference.

Then my other boss, the managing partner, forwarded me an email from NarcBoss (who was gone by now, after two weeks of ridiculous drama) accusing me of “behaving egregiously” and “acting in a menacing way” and worst of all, saying that my husband had called StaffBitch “several times” but hadn’t left a message because her voice mail wasn’t set up…the implication being that my husband was calling to threaten and frighten her. The cherry on top though was him saying that my husband and I know where he lives (because we’d been invited to his housewarming party…), so now NarcBoss’s fiancee is terrified. Like I said, my husband and StaffBitch were phone buddies. He had group texted us once or twice when we were trying to make plans I think. They jokingly called each other Bestie and she bragged about their friendship to our co-worker. My husband told me that he had indeed accidentally called her one night while working the overnight shift. He is not very tech savvy and was trying to delete the message, he said. Then the second time he was trying to delete her from his contacts and dialed her accidentally. I have done that myself and know it happens. So I went from thinking here is this young lady with tremendous potential and poise, who manages to make friends with my husband (not easy!), and manage this NarcBoss fairly well, and I can teach her things and she can grow into her potential and yay!
